• The hike to larch valley is always spectactular, especially in the fall when the larches turn a golden yellow. We were about two weeks too late to see the best of the show as many of the trees were already barren of needles. It was cool to see a carpet of golden yellow needles on the ground, and we were there on a beautiful blue sky day. It was a great way to end the hiking season before winter hits!

These Gray Jays (aka Whiskey Jacks) were very curious about all the activity on the trail.
• Early in the day I saw an alert that the Aurora Borealis would be active that night but it was cloudy and raining in Calgary at the time. I kept the idea in the back of my head aboout going out for a drive if it cleared up. It didn't look like it was going to happen until after midnight when all of a sudden the clouds around the city lifted. So I packed up my gear and headed east. The aurora got stronger and stronger the entire time I was out there and it seemed like that was going to continue all night. What an amazing thing to watch!
• I waited a long time after sunrise to make this panoramic image of Mount Lorette reflected in the Lorette Ponds. I really wanted to catch the alpenglow on the peak but it didn't happen initially and the morning glow faded as the sun came over the horizon. It wasn't until the sun rose above the mountain peaks to the east of my position that the Alpenglow began. Fortunately I made a series of images quickly because it was only a minute or so after this that a flock of ducks flew in and landed on the pond in front of me, detroying the glassy finish on the surface. The alpenglow was over before the pond was calm again. But I got the image I wanted!!...©2009, Sean Phillips.http://www.Sean-Phillips.com

 • I went out for a sunrise whoot with my Dad and we managed to find a beautiful pastoral setting with a Chinook Arch highlighting the horizon. The open prairie is so big that a regular shot just didn't do it justice, so I had to make a panoramic image to really show it off...©2007, Sean Phillips.http://www.Sean-Phillips.com

 • While camping in Jasper my Dad and I got up to see the sunrise at Pyramid Lake. It was raining and the sunrise never really developed, but we found some beautiful locations with Pyramid Mountain reflecting on Pyramid Lake. The canoes on the shore of the lake also added to the scenic landscape!..©2010, Sean Phillips.http://www.RiverwoodPhotography.com

 • Castle Mountain is in the Rocky Mountains about half way between Banff and Lake Louise. It is a very scenic spot that looks good in all sorts of light and weather conditions. I love to see it when it is being lit up from the side because the shadows in between each of the parapet like peaks falls into deep shadow and makes the mountain look even more rugged than normal. ..We were passing by at just the right time the other day to enjoy the sunrise. It was a particularly beautiful thing when the Alpenglow dropped down the face of the mountain. I love the Rockies!..©2010, Sean Phillips.http://www.Sean-Phillips.com
